Can you distinguish between feelings of “real” hunger versus “toxic” hunger?

Symptoms of Toxic Hunger
  • growling stomach
  • irritability
  • weakness
  • stomach cramping
  • lightheadedness
  • esophageal spasms
  • headaches1


Alternatively, real hunger is not felt in the stomach or head and has three primary characteristics:
  • a sensation in the throat
  • increased salivation
  • a dramatically-heightened taste sensation2


Get back in touch with real hunger by waiting out the symptoms of toxic hunger. Eating when experiencing real hunger allows you to take in only the calories your body requires thus preventing overeating.

Plants

  • 1 small red onion, chopped
  • 1 small yellow onion, chopped
  • 2 cups large button mushrooms, sliced
  • 3 cups water/homemade vegetable broth
  • 1 cup uncooked millet
  • Jar strained tomatoes or 2 cups ripe tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 tbsp chili powder
  • 1 ½ cups cooked* adzuki beans
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • black pepper

Technique

Crush and mince garlic then set aside. Sauté onion and mushrooms in a large pot until onion translucent, about 5-10 minutes. Add remaining ingredients except beans and garlic. Lower heat and simmer, covered, for about 45 minutes, until millet is cooked. Add in beans and garlic 5-10 minutes before millet is fully cooked. Season to taste with black pepper.
